Legendary Lansing High School Coach George Fox Passes Away at 88

Lansing, Michigan has lost one of its iconic high school coaches. George Fox, who led the Everett High School basketball team to a state championship in 1977, passed away at the age of 88 on Monday. Fox was a celebrated coach in the Lansing area, and his legacy will forever be tied to Magic Johnson, who played for him during his high school career.

Fox was born and raised in Fowler, Michigan, where he played basketball and won a state championship as a player. He went on to become a coach, and in 1977, he led the Everett High School boys basketball team to a state title. The team, which included Magic Johnson, went 27-1 that season and is still remembered as one of the best in Michigan high school basketball history.

After retiring from coaching the following year, Fox remained involved in the Lansing sports community. He was elected to the Greater Lansing Sports Hall of Fame in 1990, and he could often be found attending high school basketball games and other sporting events.

Magic Johnson, who went on to become one of the greatest basketball players of all time, paid tribute to Fox on Twitter. "My heart sincerely hurts after hearing that my high school basketball coach, George Fox, passed away," Johnson wrote. "As a young 15-year-old, Coach Fox helped me become a better basketball player and person. He pushed me to be great on and off the court."

Current Lansing Sexton High School boys basketball coach Dale Beard, who played on the championship team with Johnson, also shared his memories of Fox. "He was a father figure to a lot of us," Beard said. "He pushed us to be better, and he cared about us as people, not just as basketball players. He was a great coach and an even better person."

Fox's passing is a reminder of the impact that coaches can have on the lives of their players. His dedication to his craft and his commitment to his players will be remembered by those who knew him. Lansing has lost a true legend of the coaching profession, but the lessons he taught will live on for generations to come.
