Rare Black Fox Spotted Roaming Welsh Towns: Concerns for Welfare and Safety

A rare black fox has been spotted in the Vale of Glamorgan in Wales, causing concern for its welfare and safety. The fox, which is not native to the UK, is believed to be a domesticated animal kept as an exotic pet. Locals have been urged not to approach or chase the fox and to help catch it safely.

The black fox, also known as a silver fox, is not a naturally occurring species in the wild in the UK. Instead, they are bred for their fur or kept as exotic pets. Unlike their red fox counterparts, which are common in the UK, black foxes have a distinctive coloration that makes them stand out.

Locals in the towns of Barry and Sully in the Vale of Glamorgan have reported sightings of the black fox. Despite its striking appearance, animal experts have warned that it can be difficult to manage adult foxes, especially those that have been kept in captivity. The RSPCA Cymru has advised against trying to keep foxes as pets, as they have specific needs that require specialist care.

Hayley de Ronde from the organization Black Foxes UK has said that capturing the black fox will be difficult, as it is a domesticated animal and not the responsibility of local animal wardens or councils. Instead, Ms. De Ronde and a local cat rescue center have collaborated with the Vale of Glamorgan council's animal warden to capture the fox using humane traps.

Members of the public who spot the black fox have been advised not to chase it, as it is likely to be stressed. Instead, they have been urged to report any sightings to the authorities.

The RSPCA Cymru has expressed concern for the welfare of the black fox and urged any prospective owners of exotic pets to research the animal's specific needs before taking them on. They also reminded the public that exotic pets can live a long time and require specialist care from an exotics vet if they become ill, which can be expensive.

In North America, around 10% of foxes are black, while the rest are a mix of different colors, such as red. Some breeders will selectively breed black litters to produce totally black foxes. However, there are currently no restrictions in the UK on breeding or owning black foxes.

In conclusion, the sighting of a rare black fox in the Vale of Glamorgan has raised concerns about the welfare of exotic animals kept as pets. While the capture of the fox is planned, animal experts have reminded the public of the specific needs of wild animals and the importance of responsible ownership of exotic pets.
